Artin Poturlian graduated from the State Academy of Music in 1967 majoring in Music Pedagogy and Composition under Professor Pencho Stoyanov. He also studied Composition with Professor Pancho Vladigerov. From 1969 to 1974 he studied Composition at the Komitas Conservatoire in Yerevan with Professor Lazar Saryan. He worked as a music editor at the Bulgarian National Television (1967-69) and lecturer at the National Music High School in Sofia (1974-77). Since 1990 he has been teaching Polyphony at the State Academy of Music; in 2000 he was promoted associate professor.He wrote in a variety of genres. His compositions include an opera; orchestral works; opuses for chamber ensembles; a number of piano works; songs based on poems by D. Varujan, Peyo Yavorov, Radoy Ralin, Valeri Bryusov, K. Belmont and so forth; choral works, etc. His musical style combines dodecaphony and aleatory music with other tonal, modal, sonoristic and rhythmic techniques. In 1985 he won a prize at the Winter Music Evenings Competition in Pazardzhik (1985). His works were performed in Armenia, Austria, France, Georgia, Germany, Rumania, Russia and Slovakia, as well as at the Bulgarian festivals Varna Summer, Musica Nova, Holland-Bulgarian Music Festival, etc.He published in specialised music editions and in the mass media (Metrorhythmic: Tempo Modulation; Geometric Transformation of Plane and Space and Invention Polyphony).
